How to prepare your plumbing for the winter months

As we are sadly saying goodbye to summer and moving in to Autumn now is the time to start putting some thought into what may need doing around your home to prepare for the colder weather.

Leaving it to the Winter can often catch you out resulting in a plumbing emergency that can be massively inconvenient not to mention costly – water can cause a lot of damage!

Get a head start on preparing your homes plumbing system for winter now by following these helpful tips AR Plumbing and Heating have collected over our years of service to ensure that your homes plumbing system gets the protection it needs.

  • Get any leaks fixed – One of the first and most important things to get done first is to have any leaks in your system repaired. Whilst you may want to try to carry out any repairs yourself it is much wiser to call us at AR Plumbing and Heating Cornwall and let us get the job done professionally and expertly done for you. Even the smallest of leaks can cause major problems for your system in winter. Any leaking areas of your pipes are natural weak spots, and as the water in your pipes starts to expand as the temperature drops, these leaking areas can be a natural spot for the pipe to burst from the increased pressure. Not only is this highly inconveinient, but it can also be quite costly to get fixed. Taking the time now to have any leaks in your system professionally repaired can save you a lot of time, money and headaches in the coming winter months.
  • Insulate your pipes – A lot of people got caught out when the temperatures dropped in Cornwall last winter and AR Plumbing and Heating were called out to many frozen and burst pipes. Don’t let this happen to you if we have another winter like the last, even in Cornwall the winter can catch us out! Make sure that any exposed pipes around your home are properly insulated. This usually consists of wrapping pipes in an insulation foam. If you are not confident doing this yourself AR Plumbing and Heating will be more than willing to help. This will help to reduce the chance that your pipes will freeze and burst during any cold spells. It can also help you save on your water heating costs.
  • Winterize your outdoor water supplies – forgetting to turn off any outdoor supplies or appliances can result in serious damage to your plumbing system during cold weather if your pipes were to freeze. To prevent this you need to make sure your drain and disconnect any hoses or the like that may be attached to your outdoor supplies. You then need to ensure these exposed pipes themselves are fully drained of any water that might freeze and expand during the winter, and the best way to do this is usually to completely shut off the water supply to these particular supplies
  • Know where your water main is – in the even that a pipe does burst you need to know where your water main is to ensure that you are able to quickly shut off the water to minimise any damage done as you wait for repairs. In the even of a burst pipe or leak AR Plumbing and Heating will get out to you quickly so you are not left with out water for an inconvenient length of time.
