- Get any leaks fixed – One of the first and most important things to get done first is to have any leaks in your system repaired. Whilst you may want to try to carry out any repairs yourself it is much wiser to call us at AR Plumbing and Heating Cornwall and let us get the job done professionally and expertly done for you. Even the smallest of leaks can cause major problems for your system in winter. Any leaking areas of your pipes are natural weak spots, and as the water in your pipes starts to expand as the temperature drops, these leaking areas can be a natural spot for the pipe to burst from the increased pressure. Not only is this highly inconveinient, but it can also be quite costly to get fixed. Taking the time now to have any leaks in your system professionally repaired can save you a lot of time, money and headaches in the coming winter months.
- Insulate your pipes – A lot of people got caught out when the temperatures dropped in Cornwall last winter and AR Plumbing and Heating were called out to many frozen and burst pipes. - Winterize your outdoor water supplies – forgetting to turn off any outdoor supplies or appliances can result in serious damage to your plumbing system during cold weather if your pipes were to freeze. To prevent this you need to make sure your drain and disconnect any hoses or the like that may be attached to your outdoor supplies. You then need to ensure these exposed pipes themselves are fully drained of any water that might freeze and expand during the winter, and the best way to do this is usually to completely shut off the water supply to these particular supplies
- Know where your water main is – in the even that a pipe does burst you need to know where your water main is to ensure that you are able to quickly shut off the water to minimise any damage done as you wait for repairs.
